13 best moments from the Paris 2024 Olympics… so far
French 3,000m steeplechase athlete Alice Finot celebrated her triumphant breaking of the European record by proposing to her partner, triathlete Bruno Martinez Bargiela, at the Stade de France. She came in fourth in the track-and-field obstacle race, but scored a new PB of eight minutes and 58.67 seconds.
Proposing with an Olympic pin instead of a ring, she explained to The Daily Mail: ‘I told myself that if I ran under nine minutes, knowing that nine is my lucky number and that we’ve been together for nine years, then I would propose.
‘I don’t like doing things like everyone else,’ she continued. ‘So, I gave [him] a pin that I ran with. On it, it says: “Love is in Paris”‘.
Earlier in the Games, China’s Huang Yaqiong scored the mixed-doubles badminton gold and a fiancé, when fellow badminton player Liu Yuchen got down on one knee after the medal ceremony. ‘For me, the proposal is very surprising because I have been preparing for the game,’ Huang told AP News.
