7 free fitness apps

Getting fit doesn’t have to feel like a chore. We’ve compiled a list of our top fun fitness apps that might even make you forget you’re working out.

1. Get rewarded for exercising: Better Points

The Better Points app rewards you for exercising with points you can then spend on the high street in shops, such as New Look, John Lewis, Starbucks, and Hotel Chocolat; or online at sites like Amazon. You can use it for walking, cycling and running. Better Points uses your phone’s GPS to track your movements, so there’s no cheating. Use it on a regular route like a walk to work, and you might be surprised how quickly the rewards stack up.

Just don’t buy too many chocolates with your reward points, or you might cancel out the good you’ve done exercising!

2. Dance your way to fitness: Just Dance Now

We’ve chosen the Just Dance Now app because it lets you dance to a new hit song every day and if you like the social aspect of dancing you can start a dance party with other people on the app. It can also double as a handy fitness app, helping you build strength and balance, and shows you on your dashboard how many calories you have used.

3. Turn getting active into a game: Fitness RPG

You can get involved with the storylines, which mean that as you take more steps each day you are helping the apps’ heroes save Fitland from the Dark Force. Your heroes need you to take steps so they can compete!

4. Stand up!

Stand up app screenshotA number of studies have shown that sitting for eight hours or more a day increases your risk of early death. It’s important to get up, move around and stretch your legs on a regular basis. This app reminds you to get up and move at intervals of five minutes to two hours. Set it to suit your schedule and the app will also let you know how you’re doing over the week.

5. Get celebrity support: NHS Couch to 5k

Does the thought of running for 5km fill you with dread?

The Couch to 5k app from the NHS slowly builds up your stamina over the course of 9 weeks, encouraging you to get up from the sofa and get moving. Each week involves just three runs, starting with 20 minutes of exercise that alternates 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of walking. By the end of the 9-week programme, you’ll be able to run for 5km – or for 30 minutes straight. Encouragement is given throughout each workout by your choice of celebrity voiceover. Choose from popular personalities including Jo Whiley, Sarah Millican or Michael Johnson to cheer you on!

6. Try a different workout every day: Daily Workouts Fitness Trainer
