The village is 12 miles from York

A place in East Yorkshire has been named as one of the “best secret villages” to live in.

Bishop Wilton comes in at fifth on the list of 20 desirable areas to move to by The Times.

Parish councillor, Ingrid Haywood, agreed her home was special but said she would rather “keep it hidden”.

The village, in the wolds, has a church, school, community shop and an annual agricultural show.

Ingrid Haywood has long blonde hair which has been blown by the wind. A smile has filled her face and her cheeks are rosy. She has a grey jumper on. She's standing in front of several buildings and the village church, the background behind her has been blurred.

Ms Haywood says the village has improved her life

Ms Haywood moved to Bishop Wilton about nine years ago.

“I was in a bad place, I call the village my sticking plaster,” she said.

“It just made me better.”

She added: “The people are just fabulous, there are no secrets in this village.”

‘Very nosey’

Annina Dyston has a long blonde bob and a fringe. She's wearing a green turtle neck jumper with an apron, which is a lighter shade of green, on top. She's standing in front of the Bishop Wilton Community Shop.

“We don’t want people to know about it really,” Ms Dyston said.

She praised the sense of community and friendliness of villagers.

The only downside was people “could be very nosey”.

“You can’t do anything without everyone knowing,” she added.

Inside St Edith's church there is a tiled floor consisting of an intricate mosaic design which stretches all around the building. Several lines of wooden pews line the way to the altar which includes brass figures. Light from the stained glass windows seeps through, illuminating the edges of the church.

Church Warden Susan Frost believes St Edith’s church is “one of the most precious things in the village”.

“The floor is fantastic, it is a copy of a mosaic in the Vatican,” Ms Frost said.

“We have a lot of weddings here because it is a lovely setting,” she added.

Seven people sit across two tables in a cafe, they have mugs and teapots in front of them.

A local walking group have said they regularly come to Bishop Wilton

Members of a local walking group have become regulars at the cafe in the Bishop Wilton Community Shop.

John Parry, 76, described the village as a “hidden gem” and said he first discovered it on a hike.

He added it was not included on tourist maps “you’d have no reason to come unless you knew how pretty it was”.
