Britain’s ‘best’ seaside town for beating the crowds

On the coast of just north of the River Alde is the seaside town of Aldeburgh, which has been named one of the “best seaside towns” to beat the crowds in Which?’s 2024 survey. The survey took responses from thousands of Which? members, who highlighted Aldeburgh as a quiet coastal day out.

One of Aldeburgh’s most famous residents, composer Benjamin Britten, is said to have loved the “peace and quiet” the seaside destination offered.

Though the seaside town is much quieter than some of Britain’s more well-known , it remains famous for plenty of coastal favourites. In particular, the town is known for its great fish and chips and Maggi Hamblings’ Scallop on the beach – a giant sea shell art piece.

The town is also home to the Aldeburgh Festival, originally founded by Benjamin Britten in 1948, which takes place in June every year. The festival celebrates music and the arts, and is a particular draw for classical music fans.

The Martello Tower in Aldeburgh is recorded as the largest in the UK, made up of four towers joined together. The tower was originally built to keep Napoleon out.

These days it offers a unique place for visitors to stay having been converted into holiday accommodation.

The tower sleeps up to four people and offers incredible roof-top views from the stone-flagged battery on the roof.

If you can’t resist fish and chips when visiting the seaside, Aldeburgh Fish & Chips is a must-visit.

The fish and chip shop has previously been awarded as “one of the best fish and chip shops in Britain” and has been in business since 1967. The business has been awarded four out of five stars on Tripadvisor with one previous visitor saying it is “always yummy”.

When you’re done on the seafront, take a short walk to Aldeburgh Market on the High Street.

This fantastic Deli offers extensive fish counters, fresh fruit and vegetables and dairy items from local suppliers, freshly baked bread plus handmade trinkets and goods.
