Greece’s most walkable city is so beautiful

Renting a car on holiday can be extremely expensive and that’s before you’ve even forked out for petrol or insurance.

Luckily, many of Europe’s top destinations are easy to explore on foot and Greece is no exception.

While tourists might need a car to reach more secluded beaches in the country’s top islands, Athens is one of the world’s most walkable cities.

According to a study by the team at Preply, Athens is one of Europe’s most walkable cities with its top five attractions just over two miles from each other.

Despite its popularity, Athens is also one of the continent’s most affordable city breaks according to recent research by the team at Post Office Travel Money.

It helps that many of Athens’ incredible ancient attractions are an easy stroll from one another.

Start your day at the Acropolis, visiting top sites including the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike.

Bear in mind that the ancient site can get extremely busy so it’s a good idea to visit early in the morning to beat some of the crowds.

The Acropolis Museum, which houses ancient statues and information on the site, is an easy stroll from the landmarks.

After all that exploring, you might be ready for a spot of lunch, so take a 10 minute walk to Athens’ historic Plaka neighbourhood.

The boutiques in Plaka’s cobblestone streets are the ideal place to shop for souvenirs and look out for historic buildings.

From Plaka, it’s just a 15 minute walk to the Panathenaic Stadium which dates back to the 4th century. Tourists will be able to see where the first ever Olympic Games took place.

Hungry? Unwind at a taverna and indulge in some traditional Athenian food such as saganaki and dolmades.

Temperatures can soar above 30 degrees in Athens in July and August so if you’re planning a walkable city break, it might be better to travel in autumn or spring.
