Jennifer Lopez Gets Self-Referential On An Ab-Baring Tee

She is at the centre of the rumour mill, but Jennifer Lopez would like to redirect the conversation. The musician was yesterday afternoon photographed in New York with an ultra-cropped slogan tee reading, “J Lo be my mama”. As for what it meant? Well, I’m not quite sure.

What we do know is that Lopez used the opportunity to show off her abs (and a sliver of under-boob.) Could this have been an act of revenge dressing? A commentary on how we ascribe female celebrities the role of “mother”? This isn’t the first time J Lo has used fashion as a message. In August 2023, she teased her album with a Lingua Franca sweater embroidered with the phrase: “This is me…now.”

J Lo paired that crop top with a pair of dirt-washed jeans and platform sneakers. The sole pop of colour came from a Pepto Bismol-hued cardigan. She accessorised the lowkey look with a woven basket purse and oversized black sunglasses.

In her 2016 track “Ain’t Your Mama”, Lopez sings “I ain’t gon’ be cooking all day, I ain’t your mama / I ain’t gon’ do your laundry, I ain’t your mama.” And so while she may be retracting her previous stance in favour of a pro-mama position, we can at least all take it as a reminder to do our laundry.
