Lyme Regis named UK’s third best seaside towns for entertainment

The betting website OLBG have created the ‘Holiday Entertainment Index’ to profile the best destinations to visit this summer.

The index scores a rating out of ten based on factors including amusements, the cost to stay there, average weather patterns, and more, using data from Tripadvisor, Google, and Kayak. 

OLBG ranked the nine best seaside towns for holiday entertainment and Lyme Regis came third with a ranking of 7.24 out of 10.

The website read: “Lyme Regis, known as the “Pearl of Dorset,” comes in third, combining natural beauty and historic charm. One of the factors it scored best for is zoos and aquariums, mainly due to the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium, which showcases local sea life and the town’s rich maritime history.

“Lyme Regis also has 1.9 pubs with live music per 1,000 people, more than all but two other towns and 4.3 pubs per 1,000 people overall. It has a relatively dry climate, with an average of 98 rainy days per year. 

“As part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site and heritage coast, the town’s cliffs and beaches are an excellent place to discover fossils.”

 Max Gollop, from Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium, said: “We pride ourselves on showcasing marine life from the Jurassic Coast, positioning the aquarium as a traditional, family run seaside attraction where you can not only see but interact with sea creatures. 

“We’re delighted so many of our visitors return again and again to experience what we have to offer.”

Tenby in Pembrokeshire tops the list with a score of 7.71 out of 10, followed by St Ives, Cornwall narrowly beating Lyme Regis with a score of 7.29 out of 10.

This is the latest recognition for Lyme Regis as it has recently been named among the best seaside towns for food and drink by Which?. 

It was also voted as the sixth most beautiful coastal town in the U.K on the global travel site Big 7 Travel.

Eleanor Wentzell, from Lyme Regis Museum, described this is a great result for the area.

She said: “It’s fantastic to see Lyme Regis getting the recognition it deserves as a family holiday destination.

“Here at the museum visitors come all year round to gain an insight into Lyme’s fascinating history from Mary Anning and her incredible discoveries and our rich fossil heritage here on the Jurassic Coast to it’s maritime history and literary connections.

“As a seaside holiday destination, Lyme – the pearl of Dorset – is certainly hard to beat and we are delighted to play a small part in that.”
