Pretty seaside town named one of the best that’s ‘just like the Mediterranean’
This beautiful coastal town is said to be one of the prettiest in Devon, with tourists raving about its crystal clear waters and stunning beaches. Salcombe, sitting on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary in South Devon, is known for its outstanding coastal views and rolling countryside.
It makes a great base for those looking for a base to explore the Devonshire coast, with plenty of nearby attractions and towns to explore.
Described as a water sports heaven, the town is known for sailing, also offering tourists the chance to kayak, paddle board, or surf.
South Sands is an award winning, Blue Flag beach that is perfect for swimming thanks to its sheltered position. It also has a ferry that runs between Whitestrand – the centre of Salcombe – and South Sands beach.
North Sands is also a great beach spot for families, a large sandy beach perfect for pitching up for the day. Salcombe is well connected to other parts of Devon, with a ferry running to East Portlemouth – a beautiful village known for its beachside homes.
To the west lies the beaches of Bigbury on Sea and Bantham and the famous Burgh Island which is accessed at high tide via a sea tractor.
Salcombe is home to a number of walking trails for those looking to explore the coastal paths, with the South West Coast Path making an ideal trip for admiring the views.
The town itself has plenty of shopping opportunities for those exploring the area, with a range of boutique and high-street shops.
It is also home to some of the best restaurants in the UK, serving locally caught seafood and farmed produce. There are also plenty of cafes for those looking for a quick bite to eat or to taste some of their famous cream teas.
And thanks to its popularity, there are plenty of accommodation options available, from self-catering cottages to quaint B&B’s. Tourists that have visited have raved about the area, with one person saying “it’s just like the Meditteranean” in a video on TikTok.
Another said it makes “the best holiday ever” while a third wrote: “Beautiful place. Always saddened to leave for home.”
