The ‘fake’ Wetherspoons in popular Spanish hotspot beloved by British tourists
A pub on the Costa del Sol in Spain, rated the second best in its area by Tripadvisor out of 117 venues, has become a favourite among British tourists.
Taking after the popular chain Wetherspoons, the cleverly-named Wetherspains offers cheap pints and comforting British specialities to tourists travelling to Benalmadena.
The venue has amassed rave reviews, with many Brits enjoying the comforts of home amid a palm tree and sunshine backdrop.
The pub, inspired by classic British boozers, serves everything from gammon, chips and peas, sausage and mash, to deep-filled pies.
In 2023, Wetherspains was even awarded a Travellers’ Choice gong, boasting a rating of 4.5 on the travel website from 194 reviews. Its atmosphere and value were rated five out of five.
Reviews online are extremely positive, as patrons can enjoy national staples in a sunny outdoor setting near the beach.
“Lovely staff, nice food and very cheap will be back!” one reviewer wrote on Google.
“I try and come here every time I come to this area’, another said. “Owner is a really nice guy and very hard working. Good food and a nice pint. Worth coming just for the bar’s name.”
“Always a friendly welcome from Andy and his team”, one patron added. “Eaten here on numerous occasions and never been disappointed. Elevated location affords nice views from the extensive terrace. Well–stocked bar and great value. Recommended.”
Another individual also praised the view of the sea, which “makes this a great spot to call into”.
This is not the first ‘copycat’ venue to exist, with an unoffocial Brewdog seen in China, even replicating the chain’s logo.
However, BrewDog CEO James Watt said in 2023: “It’s not every day someone pays you the compliment of copying what you do. I mean, I’ll admit we were surprised when we saw a picture of the bar you’ve constructed in our image, but mainly we were peculiarly proud.
“There’s something that says ‘you’ve made it’ like a weird replica of your craft beer brand in the world’s biggest country.”
