Top Five performances of Glorious Goodwood 2024

The 2024 Glorious Goodwood festival delivered some thrilling moments and unforgettable performances, showcasing the finest in British horse racing.

Here are our top five standout performances that defined this year’s prestigious event.

Audience

The first performance worth highlighting is by John & Thady Gosden’s Audience, who triumphed in the G2 Lennox Stakes. This six-year-old gelding bounced back from a disappointing fifth-place finish at Royal Ascot’s Queen Anne Stakes.

Earlier, Audience had shocked everyone by winning the Lockinge Stakes, defeating stablemate Inspiral. In the Lennox Stakes as well, jockey Rab Havlin expertly positioned Audience and remained motionless over two furlongs out before going clear in the final furlong to secure a decisive four-length victory, proving that Audience’s Lockinge triumph was no fluke!

Kyprios

The second standout performance at Glorious Goodwood came immediately after Audience’s win in the Goodwood Cup. Aidan O’Brien’s Kyprios delivered an exceptional run, breaking the course record with a time of 3m 21s.

Despite Ryan Moore being one of the world’s top jockeys, Kyprios’ win appeared effortless and never in doubt for the top spot. This victory marked Kyprios’ sixth Group 1 success, cementing his status as one of the greats in the staying division, alongside legends like Stradivarius.

Notable Speech

Moving on to Wednesday and the Sussex Stakes – Godolphin’s Notable Speech emerged as a convincing winner of the week’s feature race.

Charlie Appleby’s 2000 Guineas victor had inexplicably poor form at Royal Ascot, finishing second last in the St James’s Palace Stakes, but similarly to Audience, Notable Speech redeemed his recent performance and silenced doubts about his quality.

With William Buick onboard, he expertly utilised the cutaway at Goodwood, waiting for the pace to collapse before making a daring, paint-scraping dash up the inside rail to secure victory.

Big Evs

Another notable performance from the week’s racing came from Big Evs, trained by Mick Appleby. As the pre-race favourite for the King George, Big Evs was favoured over the Australian contender Asfoora. True to expectations, Big Evs delivered a commanding performance, reversing the result from the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The King George is widely renowned for its high-speed finish on a nearly downhill stretch, making for a thrilling spectacle. This time, Big Evs handled the challenge superbly, crossing the line as the victor. With wins in both the Molecomb and King George, Big Evs now etches his name into Glorious Goodwood’s storied history.

Get It

The final standout performance of the week came on the last day in the Stewards’ Cup, where George Baker’s Get It delivered a stunning surprise at odds of 40/1, and even higher before the race.

After a challenging run in Class 2 action at Ascot in July, Get It excelled this time around. Jockey Pat Cosgrave took the initiative, racing on the near side and aggressively leading from the front. By hugging the near rail throughout, Get It maintained a strong position that always put it in contention for a good finish.

It was a masterclass in race tactics, with Cosgrave’s strategy proving highly effective in this thrilling and impressive performance.
